Yes.
WHY?
Directing is my first love. It always has been. But then this thing happened: I fell into some feature AD work and found that the other half of my brain actually functions reasonably well. I liked that. Working over the years both creatively and logistically has left me with a strong vision for both sides of that line and where they best meet. As a result, I get asked to produce from time to time. That’s the short story. Longer version available upon request. Preferably over drinks or good food.
DIRECTOR
I’m captivated by oft-missed moments between people, touch, light, the elegance of the ordinary, real tears, dancing (of all odd varieties) and the way the movement of a camera carries as much voice as the written word.
1st ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Plan. Schedule. Back the director. Serve the producers. Lead the crew. Yell a lot at everyone. ADs strive to do all of those things. Some of the successful ones do. I don’t.
Yelling when it counts is important. Yelling to seem important is stupid; it doesn’t make people work faster or better or engender respect. What does make people work faster and better and engenders respect is being good at all of those other things. The producers, directors, and crew of the features, TV shows and commercials I’ve worked say I am. Ask them.
PRODUCER
I like setting up productions and making them run smoothly. Sounds simple, right? It would be great if it were so. But I guess we need something to lose sleep over.
